Fakir Sahib Street, Jambazar — where it all began
Our Story
A Chennai Tradition Since 1915
On a quiet lane off Fakir Sahib Street in Jambazar, Triplicane, a small family kitchen began preparing sweets the way they had always been made — slow-cooked, hand-finished, and shared with neighbours long before they were ever sold. That kitchen became Basha Halwawala.
For more than a hundred years, the same care has gone into every batch: ghee heated the old way, sugar syrup judged by hand and eye, and recipes passed from one generation to the next without shortcuts. Triplicane grew and changed around us, but the taste behind our counter never did.
Today, the family that started it all still stands behind the same counter their grandparents once did — serving a city that has trusted us with its festivals, weddings, and everyday sweetness for four generations.
The Signature Taste of Basha Halwawala
Dum Ka Roat
Our most cherished creation, Dum Ka Roat is a dense, richly spiced sweet bread slow-cooked under low heat, or "dum," until its edges turn deep gold and its centre stays soft and fragrant with cardamom, ghee and jaggery. It is a recipe our family has guarded for generations, and one this city has never let us retire.
Made in small batches, in the traditional way, on the same street where it was first prepared over a hundred years ago.
